This version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing is a playful project from the King among geeks (and most mortals if we’re to be honest) Joss Whedon. Following the production and subsequent success of The Avengers, one might have excused the man for taking a well-earned victory break. That was certainly on the cards for the Whedon clan when Kai Cole (Whedon’s wife) suggested they spend their vacation time making an intimate and fully independent film instead. The result was Much Ado About Nothing, a project that couldn’t be further from the comparably epic The Avengers.
This modern retelling of the classic Shakespeare comedy is laden with Whedon’s trademark wit and just a few familiar faces from the Whedon Universe; Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) Alexis Denisof (Buffy, Angel) Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Dr Horrible) and Clark Gregg (The Avengers) plus many, many more all came together to help Joss craft this beautiful little film.
With complete secrecy the film has remained under wraps for some time, with only a few tweets, marketing shots and posters allowed to find their way on to the internet for us peasantry, but now, finally the full trailer for Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing is up for our delictation. While unlikely to blow minds, it’s plain to see that the film has been lovably crafted, and is an important project, not just to the director but also the cast who have rallied behind the film from the start. Much Ado About Nothing premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and is set to have its theatrical release on June 7, 2013.
